Jomsom- Muktinath Trekking:  Nepal

This is the classic tea house trek and boasts some of the best trekking lodges in Nepal. The main feature of the trek is the walk through the deepest gorge in the world carved by the Kaligandaki River, which carries water from the Tibetan plateau and joins to the Ganges in India. During this trek you will experience the mid-hills, high mountains and Tibetan-like country. This trek takes you to Ghorepani (Poonhill), Tatopani (Natural Hot spring), Marpha (Apple capital village of Nepal), Jomsom (Windy Valley), Kagbeni and Muktinath (the famous pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists). To the Hindus, Muktinath is a sacred place of salvation. Hindus believe that washing in the waters here guarantees salvation after death. To the Buddhists it is a place where the great sage, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), meditated. You will meet a variety of Nepalese people along the trek. There is a mixture of Gurung and Magar people in the lower parts of Kaligandaki, Thakali people from Ghasa to Jomsom, and people with obvious Tibetan roots (the Lopas) around Muktinath and up to Mustang.
The Kaligandaki Valley has been a major trading area for centuries. Only 50 years ago, traders bartered salt from Tibet in exchange for rice and barley from the mid-hills of Nepal. If you don’t have enough time to do the entire trek, you can fly to Jomsom, trek to Muktinath, and fly back to Pokhara within 4–5 days.
